Holiday Survival Tips for Dieters

The solution to almost any holiday challenge is to have a plan and be prepared. Here are some tips to help dieters survive the holiday season.

  • Plan and prepare for parties and events one at a time. Ask yourself, what is the biggest challenge this poses and how can I overcome it?
  • Never go to a party hungry. Trying to save calories is the surest way to ensure you will overindulge. Eat all your meals as you normally would before you arrive.
  • Fill your plate with non-starchy veggies and limit the amount of starches you consume.
  • If you chose to have a dessert, chose a small serving and limit yourself to just one.
  • If you chose to indulge in alcohol, refrain from dessert. Alcohol is empty calories.
  • Remember to stay hydrated and drink water. Often, when we feel hungry, we really are thirsty. Water can also help you feel fuller.
  • When cooking, choose lower fat versions of ingredients and substitute lower calorie recipes when possible. Everyone can benefit from being healthier.
  • When doing your holiday shopping, plan ahead and pack some bars. Having your food with you prevents you from getting overly hungry and giving in to mall food and drive- thru windows.
  • When tempted to overindulge, remind yourself how you feel after you do. Instead, visualize the opposite: How will you feel when you are thinner?

Who will you tell?
What will you wear?
Where will you go?
Why is reaching your goal so important?
